Emoji Display Guide
Emojis do not always look the same everywhere. This short guide explains the most common display quirks so nothing catches you by surprise.
- Appearance depends on the device and app. Each platform draws emojis with its own artwork, so the same character can look different on iPhone, Android, Windows and elsewhere.
- Older devices may not support new emojis. Recently added emojis can be missing until the operating system is updated.
- Combined emojis can appear split. Some emojis are sequences of joined characters; a device that does not support the sequence may show the separate parts instead of one image.
- Pasted emojis may change form. The character you copy is the same, but the platform you paste into renders it with its own design.
- Meaning can shift with culture and context. An emoji’s common meaning in one community or generation may differ in another.
If you see a blank box or a slightly different picture, that is normal and usually down to the device rather than an error.
